Higher-education institution
Confirm the exact legal name of the degree-awarding institution—not only a platform, counsellor or learning partner.
Validity depends on four exact details: the awarding institution, programme name, online mode and admission session. Checking only the university's general recognition is not enough.
UGC's 2020 regulations state that recognized online undergraduate and postgraduate degrees conforming to the rules are treated as equivalent to the corresponding conventional awards. Recognition must cover the relevant higher-education institution, programme, mode and admission period.
Confirm the exact legal name of the degree-awarding institution—not only a platform, counsellor or learning partner.
Check that the specific degree, such as MBA, BBA, MCA or M.Com, appears for the institution.
Confirm that the programme is listed for Online mode. ODL or conventional approval is not automatically the same entry.
Verify recognition or entitlement for the session in which admission is being taken.
If the programme involves a statutory or professional body, check its separate requirements as well.
Match the admission confirmation and receipt with the authorized institution and retain both documents.
| Question | What equivalence supports | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Academic award | The recognized online award is treated as equivalent to the corresponding conventional award under UGC rules. | Identical teaching quality or student experience across institutions. |
| Government jobs | The degree can be considered when a notification asks for the corresponding qualification. | Eligibility where the notification imposes additional marks, subject, age or experience conditions. |
| Further study | The recognized degree can support applications to higher education. | Automatic admission; the receiving institution can impose its own requirements. |
| Employment | The degree mode has regulatory equivalence when the rules are satisfied. | Selection by every recruiter or a guaranteed job, role or salary. |
